Hydrochloric acid is an inorganic acid and belongs to the group of mineral acids. In nature it is found as part of the gastric acid. Hydrochloric acid has the chemical symbol HCl and is sometimes also known as muriatic acid or salt acid.

Use and labelling of hydrochloric acid

In food industry hydrochloric acid is used as an acidity regulator. Where hydrochloric acid is used, it has to appear on the label of the product. As a European food additive it is known under the number E 507.
