Sardinops sagax is a sardine in the family of Clupeidae. It is known under many common names, such as Pacific sardine or South American pilchard. The fish plays an important role in commercial fishery. Several lineages may be distinguished:

  • Japanese pilchard (lat.: Sardinops sagax melanosticta)
  • Pacific pilchard (lat.: Sardinops sagax caerulea)
  • Southern African Pilchard (lat.: Sardinops sagax ocellata)
  • South American Pilchard (lat.: Sardinops sagax sagax)
