Each ovary develops into a small fruit and forms a cluster with other fruits. Where the fleshy part of a fruit is not derived from its ovaries but its hypanthium, for example in strawberries, the aggregate fruit is an accessory fruit. Some aggregate fruits carry their seeds on the outside of their fruiting body. Types of aggregate fruitAggregate fruits may be follicle fruits (for example apple and pear, aggregate berries (for example custard apple), drupelet fruits (for example blackberry and raspberry) und nutlet fruits (for example strawberry). Many aggregate fruits are called berries, even though most of them are not true berry fruits. |
