Scorpaeniformes, Mail-cheeked fishes, zool.: Scorpaeniformes, de.: Panzerwangen, Drachenkopfartige

The order of Scorpaeniformes is a zoological order within fish. Their species are highly developed ray-finned fish with a relatively large head. In most species the head of Scorpaeniformes is armoured with bones. All fish of this order have a backwards extension of the third infraorbital bone starting below the eye socket and reaching across the cheek. This distinguishing characteristic is called the suborbital stay and is the reason for the unofficial name mail-cheeked fishes.

To the order of Scorpaeniformes belong:

  • scorpionfishes
  • sea robins
  • greenlings
  • lumpsucker
  • sculpins
  • Scheibenbäuche
